After graduating in 1993 from Hereford College of Art and Design, I moved back to my home town of York and set up my workshop.I have been greatly inspired by the beautiful coastline of North Yorkshire and places such as Staithes and Whitby. I love the rugged landscape, houses, birdlife and boats. Using driftwood and flotsam that I have gathered from the beaches, I have made a variety of street scenes, 3d landscapes and hand carved and painted seabirds. I’ve sold these for many years in galleries all over the UK from Edinburgh to St Ives.I have a much adored black labrador Louis who is a constant source of joy for me and has appeared in my work. I have carved scenes recording our daily life together and his individual habits and idiosyncrasies. All my work whether birds, dogs and figures are handcarved from wood and then painted. I make a variety of 3d wall pieces as well as free standing ones.Still using my skill of hand-carving, I have recently started making pieces inspired by the art of burlesque. I love all things vintage and the humour and cheekiness of burlesque theatre always makes me smile. I have tried to recreate the atmosphere of the burlesque and music halls, with a variety of themed saucy ladies. Some of them are on hand-made music boxes.
